Sarah, I love how literary you and your friends are! Such a delight to hear what everyone's reading. I don't have a set summer reading list (though I love the idea of one!), but here are a few that are awaiting my attention:

Ourselves by Charlotte Mason
Raising the Christian Family You Never Had by Mary DeMuth
Christian Proficiency by Martin Thornton
Run with the Horses by Eugene Peterson
A Room with a View by E.M. Forster

I need another novel in there. Maybe something by Elizabeth Goudge or Rumer Godden. (Sarah Morrison: if this is your first time reading In This House of Brede, you're in for a real treat. It was my favorite novel that I read in all of 2011 :) ) Or maybe I'll take Anna's advice and read North and South. I've never read anything by Elizabeth Gaskell...

Also, I absolutely love that you used the word "doughty." :)

Ooh some fab books and if you're reading R.S Thomas that warrants a return trip here. He was a previous vicar in Dads parishes and then moved back to Aberdaron, just down the road from us now. I studied him for a level. It was coloured somewhat by local knowledge:-)) I love his poetry. You could come on pilgrimage. Think you might get a lot out of the book on Pilgrimage by our Archdeacon ANdrew Jones. Just a thought.

Seriously, read some Updike. At least a handful of short stories. :) and R.S. Thomas is a great poet - I forget if we discussed Merwin or not but he's wonderful as well. Christian Wiman has written some very good poetry and prose..

And to redheadkate...I wholeheartedly plead with you to keep North and South on the list. It's one of my faves. It combines the magnetic love story of Jane Austen with the social consciousness of Charles Dickens. Not to be missed!!!

My list will inevitably grow. My book-a-week habit forces that. But...the start of my summer list is A Place on Earth by Wendell Berry, A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, The Provincial Lady in London by E.M. Delafield, Everybody Was So Young by Amanda Vail, Writing Down the Bones, by Natalie Goldberg, and Middlemarch which I'm reading in chunks throughout the year. A stack of books is a delight to my soul. I've been hoarding some of these for our upcoming Smoky Mountain vacation and I can't wait to dive in!
